Understanding the Differences

Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu:

Jiu-jitsu is a martial art that can be practiced in two main ways: with a gi (traditional uniform) or without a gi (no-gi). Although the fundamental principles of the art remain the same, there are significant differences between the two styles.

At 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, we primarily focus on no-gi jiu-jitsu, which emphasizes grappling techniques that can be applied in real-life scenarios. Here are some of the major differences between gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu:

The most obvious difference between the two styles is the attire. In gi jiu-jitsu, practitioners wear a traditional gi, which is made of a thick and durable cotton material. No-gi jiu-jitsu, on the other hand, is practiced in athletic shorts and a tight-fitting shirt or rashguard.

Gripping techniques are more prevalent in gi jiu-jitsu, as the gi provides multiple points of grip. Practitioners can use lapels, sleeves, and pants to control their opponent’s movements. In no-gi jiu-jitsu, grip options are limited, and practitioners must rely on other techniques to control their opponents.

The different attire in gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu affects the way practitioners move on the mat. In gi jiu-jitsu, practitioners can use the friction of the gi to their advantage, making movements such as passing the guard and sweeping easier. In no-gi jiu-jitsu, practitioners must rely more on body positioning and movement to execute these techniques.

While the fundamentals of submission techniques are the same in both gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu, there are some differences in how these techniques are applied. In gi jiu-jitsu, practitioners have more options for submissions, such as collar chokes and lapel-based techniques. In no-gi jiu-jitsu, practitioners must rely more on naked chokes and joint locks.

At 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, we believe that no-gi jiu-jitsu offers several advantages over gi jiu-jitsu, particularly for those interested in practical self-defense techniques. No-gi jiu-jitsu emphasizes movement, body positioning, and control techniques that can be applied in real-life situations, regardless of what attire the attacker is wearing.
